It might just be the most talked about love-or-love-not look at the Oscars this year. Tilda Swinton cutting a strut on the red carpet in black washed silk draped Alber Elbaz for Lanvin.
We give her a standing ovation on The Juicer. It’s a fashion-forward look. It’s a dare-to-be different statement without flashing too much flesh and diamonds. We lick.
Dividing the fashion crowd

More black but with wow. Penelope Cruz loves a feathered fashion statement and continues the trend from last year with glorious Dior.
Note the absence of bling – she gets it right and doesn’t do diamonds like they were going out of fashion. Keep-it-simple earrings nail the look.
Dior does it for Cruz

It was gloriously over the top with oversized collar and swoops of fabric flowing over the red carpet, but Heidi Klum pulled it off in a drop-dead red Galliano gown.
Sharp and simple jewellery took the backseat instead of hogging the limelight and was a refreshing change from the hundreds and thousands of diamonds on show at the Oscars (see Nicole Kidman post). Less is best. Â
Red alert

Marion Cotillard opted not to play in safe in favourite Chanel to wow the crowd in Jean Paul Gaultier instead.
The Best Actress winner dazzled in a sequin-encrusted dress made glorious with a fishtail shape and white pearlised sequins hugging her curves and loving her best assets.
It is a love-or-love-not look but we give it a big style thumbs up for daringness and glam.Â
Shine like me

It was a look designed to draw attention away from her baby bump – lashings of bling on the neckline. But Nicole Kidman overdazzled – and not in a good way.
The dress was at its perfect best and needed no distractions. The diamonds-are-forever look was too Bond and not enough Balenciaga.
Bling this

She stuck to black rather than razzle dazzle red but it was a winner look for Hilary Swank in Versace.
The Oscar-winning actress wowed in a one-shouldered Versace frock livened up with a sprinkling of flowers at the neckline line to make the look less austere. Flower power is go this season. Accessorise with rosettes like Swank to avoid an over-fussy finish.
The look is in the detail

Jennifer Garner was the surprise fashion hit at the Oscars.
Her stunning black Oscar de la Renta strapless gown, handpicked by celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe, flaunted a tight hug-me bandaged waist and fair amount of frou frou accessorised with hundreds and thousands of sparkle from a Van Cleef and Arpels necklace dripping with 61 carat diamonds.
